1. The list of the top 100 challenged or banned books from 1990 - 2000 is here: http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bbwlinks/100mostfrequently.htm (or, for a less youth-oriented list, go here: http://books.google.com/googlebooks/banned/). Which of these books have you read?I've read:
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Blubber by Judy Blume
A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein (LOVE)
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Anarchist Cookbook by William Powell
The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (one of my favorites)
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs (HORRIBLE)
Currently on my reading list:
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Ulysses by James Joyce
Have always wanted to read:
Lolita by Vladimir Nabakov
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison (read part of it a while ago)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (saw the film with my mom, LOVED)
2. Which of those books, if any, had a strong effect on you -- either positive or negative? How did they affect you?The Catcher in the Rye had a very positive effect on me, I absolutely loved it. I've no clue why on Earth losers see themselves in the main character, he's an amazing person. Slaughter-House Five was boring & I almost killed myself while reading it for class in college.
3. Have you ever been personally affected by or involved in a challenge or a ban of a book? If yes, tell us a bit about it.I think somewhere along the line Before Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas might have been banned. That book completely changed my life.
4. Have you ever read a book that you felt should have been banned? If yes, why?Anything by Burroughs. I absolutely loathe him, he shouldn't have the honor of being called a writer.
5. How do you feel about the banning of books? Is it an important issue to you?Books shouldn't be banned, society should be wiser, I believe.
friday5:
Broken.
1. What's the last thing you broke?
A cigarette.
2. What's the most expensive thing you've broken?
My car, but it wasn't my fault, I swear.
3. Do you consider yourself clumsy or graceful?
I get more graceful as I get older, but I am a bit clumsy when I'm nervous.
4. How much money do you have in your wallet right now?
About 50 centimos.
5. Someone asks for change while you're walking down the street -- what do you do?
Depends on the person, usually I just walk by, cos I'm poor, too, but if it's a person outside of my mother's church, I usually give them whatever 1 or 2 centimo coins I have in my wallet.
